Upgrading ShoreTel V series switches broke voice mail
0After upgrading our ShoreTel 11.1 system to the latest version, 12.1, the sites with Voice series switches no longer had voice mail capabilities. If you missed a call the link would just ring 4 times and go to dead air.
Knowing that V series ShoreGear switches were sensitive to NTP for voice mail to function, it was time to check the switch configuration.
When connecting via SSH using admin/ShoreTel as my login/password, I noticed the configuration showed the following incorrect NTP info:
Time server IP address = 132.163.4.101
However, when I tried to change the time server IP I received this message:
please use Director’s Sites page to set Time Server (NTP) Ip Address
Logging into Director’s Sites page and inputting the Network Time Protocol Server and rebooting the switch did the trick.
ShoreWare Director > Administration > Sites > My specific site:
Extract ShoreTel Communicator msi from Setup.exe
1Point your browser to http://servername/ShorewareResources/ClientInstall to find the download link for the ShoreTel Communicator.
In an Administrator command prompt, run Setup.exe /b”C:\extracted” (note there is intentionally not a colon after /b)
The GUI installer will decompress the .msi and 1033.mst files to the path specified, and present you with Next or Cancel. Choose Cancel and then Finish. (1033.MST is just an English language transform that is not really needed.)
You now have your files extracted from the Installshield exe so that you can use to deploy ShoreTel Communicator via a Group Policy Object. (GPO)
Unfortunately running Setup.exe /? will not help you. I found the /b in an Installshield manual. The files are also extracted to a GUID named folder in %temp% too, but this is a safer bet.
Skype Full Install Link
0Look no further for the Skype full install executable (also known as an offline installer):
http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetupFull.exe
Note: Sometimes there is an auto update after installing the latest full version. This is normal behavior.
It would be nice if Skype made this easier to find on their site. This file comes in handy in case the normal Setup.exe fails to install.
Disable Java auto update
0When using Java on machines in which users do not have administrative rights, like Terminal Servers or Remote Desktop Session Hosts, it is best to disable the auto updates.
Here are the registry settings to disable the 32-bit Java auto updates, on a 64-bit Remote Desktop Session Host (Terminal Server):
Open regedit and browse to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy
Add a DWORD Value called EnableJavaUpdate and set it to 0

32bit: Open regedit and browse to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy
Note: To install Java without the updater to begin with, download the offline installer, execute the .exe and cancel the install. You can then find the extracted files in %APPDATA%\admin-user-used-to-install\LocalLow\Sun\Java\ and copy them to your network location or local drive. Finally run the installer with the following switches:
msiexec /i “\\server-name\share-name\jre1.6.0_29\jre1.6.0_29.msi” JAVAUPDATE=0 JU=0 AUTOUPDATECHECK=0
The above is not a silent install, just an install without the auto updater components. Also, you will see examples online mentioning IEXPLORE ADDLOCAL and MOZILLA, but those options have all been deprecated since 1.6.0_10.
Create an LPR remote output queue in IBM i while using an HP JetDirect print server
0Below is an example of how to create an LPR/LPD output queue for an Okidata 320 Turbo printer on IBM i (AS400). If your Okidata printer has networking builtin, then create a SNMP print device instead of this type of output queue. This example is when the printer is hooked up to an external HP JetDirect 170x external print server:
CRTOUTQ – enter
- F9
Output queue: FORMS
Library: QUSRSYS
Remote System: *INTNETADR
Remote printer queue: lp
- page down
Writers to autostart: 1
Connection type: *IP
Destination type: *OTHER
Manufacturer type and model: *OKI320IBM
Internet Address: 192.168.1.10
- page down
Print separator page: *NO
Text ‘description’: Okidata 320 forms printer at main office
- page down
- enter
See if the new writer FORMS shows up:
WRKWTR WTR(*ALL) – enter
If you don’t see a writer, start it with this command:
STRRMTWTR OUTQ(FORMS) – enter
Need to make changes?
ENDWTR WTR(FORMS) OPTION(*IMMED) – enter
CHGOUTQ – enter
Output queue: FORMS
Library: QUSRSYS – enter
- F9

Select Abobe Reader email client
0When using Adobe Reader to submit forms via email, the application will prompt you about your mail client type. Your choices are: Desktop Email Application (default) or Internet Email, and for Outlook you need to choose the default.
If you make a mistake or need to change your setting, you will not see it easily in Adobe Reader Preferences. Below are the steps to make the Adobe Reader prompt again the email application:
- Open Adobe Reader
- Top menu >Edit > Preferences…
- Categories: General (left-hand pane)
- In the Warnings section on the right un-check Do not show edit warnings and choose the Reset All Warnings button
- Choose OK and the Preferences changes will be saved
How to tell Windows 7 detected SSD drive
1An easy way to tell if Windows 7 has properly detected your drive as an SSD is a simple task.
- Choose Properties on your drive letter
- Choose the Tools tab, Select Defragment now…
- Choose Configure schedule…
- Choose Select disks…
It is at this point you should NOT see your disk listed. This means Windows 7 did in fact detect the drive correctly as an SSD. You do not want to defragment an SSD drive. The firmware on the disk usually has something called TRIM support that handles where data is written. If you were to defragment the drive, the lifespan and speed can actually degrade.

ShoreTel Communicator encountered error while attempting to connect to server
3Recently I upgraded our ShoreTel server from version 9.2 to 11.1, with seemingly no issues. I then began to deploy the new ShoreTel Communicator to our end users and on our Citrix / Remote Desktop Servers. On the Citrix / Remote Desktop Servers, is where things got a little bumpy.
I logged into Citrix without Administrator user permissions and ran the new client, but was greeted with the following error:
Encountered error while attempting to connect to server.
The next step was to login as an Administrator and check Event Viewer. In the System events I noticed a DCOM error listed as Event ID 10016 which meant the users was not granted the Local Activation Permission for a certain CLSID. See below:
So I copied the CLSID by highlighting it and pressing Control-C, and searched by choosing Find in regedit to see where this showed up. The answer was at the bottom of Event Viewer in the Status bar, revealing that the issue involved the DCOM Config for STClientLogin.
Now for the fix. Follow the steps below and your headache will be alleviated:
- Login as an Administrator if you haven’t already
- Browse to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services
- Expand and choose DCOM Config (choose No to any warnings that popup)
- Find STClientLogin, right-click, and choose Properties
- Add the group Everyone and give it Allow permissions to all the listed categories
- Choose OK to close the appropriate windows and you are done
That’s it. You have now added the proper permissions for non-Administrator users to use the ShoreTel Communicator.
Generate labels for your tape backup
0If you want a simple method of generating barcodes for your backup tapes this site is for you. It will also make things easier to read even if your tape library/drive doesn’t support barcodes. Just visit the link below and it will create a .pdf document of labels that you can print on Avery label part 6577 sheets.
Disable Adobe Flash Player Auto Update For All Users
0To disable the auto update feature of Adobe Flash Player 10.3, create a file called mms.cfg in %WINDIR%\System32\Macromed\Flash (64-bit: %WINDIR%\SysWow64\Macromed\Flash) and include the following line:
AutoUpdateDisable=1
IMPORTANT: Be sure to Save As… in UTF-8 encoding.
Then close/re-open your browser for the change to take effect.
Here is a bat script I use in the same GPO I assign the app with:
IF EXIST C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash (copy mms.cfg C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash /Y) ELSE (copy mms.cfg C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash /Y)
That way the mms.cfg file is copied when the computers restart and it checks to see if they have a 64bit OS.
